Abstract: This study attempts to estimate the amount of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) used by consumers in Kota Kinabalu district and their perceptions over this food additive added to daily food consumption. The survey revealed that 76.5% of the total respondents use MSG in their food preparation. Around 78.2% of respondents show their preferences on food containing MSG and claimed that MSG makes a variety of food taste better. The research also revealed that most of the respondents strongly believed MSG added in food can cause hair loss, migraine and thirst. There were distortions over the usage of MSG in food regarding the health benefits.
